With the support of the Montgomery County Under-21 Activity Fund, a Good Decisions Grant from State Farm Insurance, the Montgomery County Recreation Department, the Universities at Shady Grove, and Subway at Goshen Plaza, students at Watkins Mill High School conducted a program to draw the line on under twenty-one alcohol use that included prevention education and activities that would engage our students’ passion for soccer and also provide a beneficial activity outside of the school day. WMHS students were recognized for their programs at the annual Geico Student Awards from the Washington Regional Alcohol Program on April 23, 2010.
The specific components of the program were:
Alcohol Awareness for Students: A Presentation from Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP)
On March 22, 2010
over 125 students in Spanish for Native Speakers classes benefited from a presentation on alcohol awareness. Then in class the following day they had a forum on the dangers of underage drinking. Information about the presentation can be found at http://www.wrap.org/files/youthOutreach.htm
Teen Interlock Study April 14, 2010
A group of students and their parents participated in a discussion group that focused on the possibility of using an ignition interlock as a preventative approach to reducing alcohol-involved crash-related fatalities.
On April 28, District 39 Delegate Kirril Reznik talked to 30 students in the Modern Urban World History class about bills that were proposed in this year’s session of the General Assembly to require installing these ignition devices in certain situations.
2nd Annual Indoor Futsal Tournament April 24, 2010
Once again we hosted a futsal tournament open to all students at WMHS as part of our drawing the line project. Teams of 8 players signed up for a double elimination tournament. Each team had to come up with a creative name that reflects our theme of educating students about the dangers of underage drinking. The Montgomery County Department of Recreation’s Futsal Program provided equipment, referees and youth to help our students run the tournament. The first place team won a t-shirt with the logo of The Universities at Shady Grove, a gift certificate and a medal. Our Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) Latin dance team performed.
Poster Contest
As part of the 2010 Futsal Tournament, participating team members and more than 60 students made posters on the dangers of drinking and driving. Prizes were awarded to the best posters.

Students collected video and still photos of the activities that focused on raising awareness about the dangers of underage drinking. The video about the futsal tournament can be seen at http://wmhsreads.org/programs/good_decisions/
